2018-19 School Year, Volume 13, Issue 4

Wow, that was fast! We can’t believe 2018 is already drawing to a close. Thank you for your support and participation in getting this school year off to a great start. Don't miss all the content in this month's newsletter: art, movies, a program you've probably never heard of, a special volunteer and more.

And brief news before we hit Winter Break: at the November General Membership Meeting we voted to approve a Drama Club for 2nd thru 5th graders in the spring led by 3rd grade teacher Gabe Carbajal and we discussed alternatives to the bi-annual auction fundraiser like a more casual event for the spring of 2020. We’d love to have you at our next meeting at 7:00 pm on January 17. Until then, have a great break and Happy New Year!

Program Spotlight: Angel Program

The Angel Program at Grand Ridge provides a helping hand to students who need extra support with basic necessities. The program is a confidential, behind-the-scenes PTSA program made possible by donations from GR parents; both the donors (known as “Angels”) and the students in need remain anonymous.

Angel donors make a huge difference in the lives of individual students within our GR community. Anyone can become an Angel donor or choose to donate at any time. If you’re interested in learning more or being added to the Angel Program email list, contact Molly Maybell at

More After School Movies Coming Soon!

Fun times ahead! We will show Sherlock Gnomes (PG) on Wed, Jan 9 and Paddington 2 (PG) on Wed, Jan 23, for your student's enjoyment right after school.

Each After School Movie date is open to all grades (K-5) and there are 100 first-come-first-served spots available for each movie. A $10 donation is requested per Grand Ridge student.

Registration for the movie is due no later than the Monday before the showing you wish to attend. No exceptions. Click here to register your child and sign-up to volunteer.  Once your child's spot is reserved, you will receive an e-mail confirmation.

Volunteer of the Month

November's volunteer of the month is Farha Ajir-LaHue in recognition of her work successfully chairing the Reflections Art Contest this fall. She can also be seen around the school volunteering with the Grizzly Patch Garden, as an Art Docent, Cultural Fair and more.

Farha also wanted to express her thanks to the Principal, office staff and custodial team, PTSA members, judges, and all the Grizzly artists and their families for making this year's Reflections a big success.

Originally from Malaysia, in 2014 Farha moved to the Issaquah Highlands with her husband and son who is now in third grade. Farha, thank you so much for all the work you do for Grand Ridge! We’re so lucky to have you in our community!

Reflections Art Contest Reception & Finalists

On November 14, the PTSA hosted an exhibition and reception to celebrate the art work submitted to the 2018-19 Reflection Art Program by 32 Grand Ridge students. Students created original works of art based on the theme “Heroes Around Me” in this national art contest.

We are excited to share the names of the Grand Ridge students whose artwork was selected to move onto the Issaquah District competition:

Elias Lopez (Grade 1/Ms. de Haan) - Visual Arts
Saahil Jain (Grade 1/Ms. Doherty) - Visual Arts
Shikha Shitikond (Grade 1/Mrs. Fulghum) - Visual Arts
Nivedita Saju Menon (Grade 3/Ms. Frost) - Visual Arts
Tanvi Bhandari (Grade 3/Ms. Chang) - Visual Arts
Sebastian Castro-Ayala (Grade 3/Mrs. Chapman) - Photography
Angelina Lopez (Grade 4/Ms. Yost) - Visual Arts
Medha Rao (Grade 4/Mrs. Wright) - Visual Arts
Virginia Lee (Grade 4/Mrs. Pathak) - Literature
Kaitlyn Su (Grade 5/Ms. Herman) - Visual Arts
Akshadha Seshamani (Grade 5/Mr. Kalmus) - Literature & Music Composition

The District’s reception will be held on Tuesday, January 15 from 6:30-8:00pm at Issaquah High School. It is a great opportunity for students and families to see the broad range of creativity from Issaquah elementary, middle, and high school students.

And if this inspires your student to get creative, the theme for next year’s Reflections Art Contest is “Look Within”.

Special thanks to the Art Docents for having an activity table and to Sarahi Ayala-Vela for taking pictures.
