2018-19 School Year, Volume 13 Issue 2

You Answered the Call!

As a community you came together in a big way during Orange Ruler raising $82,500 for class programs and school events this year! Thank you for your support. It was great to see 14 classes meet or exceed their class goal and 76% of students participate during the fundraiser. And we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for the Grizzly Run where the students and teachers really showed their spirit for Grand Ridge.

Liette Loiselle, Volunteer of the Month

We are so happy to recognize Liette Loiselle as our volunteer of the month. Liette led our Orange Ruler fundraiser so the impact of her work will reach all areas of the school!

Liette has a daughter in fifth grade and son in third grade. She and her family just joined the Grand Ridge community a little over a year ago when they moved from Canada. Although in Canada they weren’t familiar with fundraising for schools, that didn’t stop her from stepping up when she found out about the need here. She and a mighty team worked during the summer break to prepare for the critical fundraiser for our school this year and with their hard work we achieved great results!

Spotlight On: YMCA Recess Coach

The bell rings and hundreds of kids pour out of the halls onto the playground. Some grab their friends and start playing basketball or jumping rope. Others hang back, not quite sure how to navigate the recess social and athletic scene. With only a handful of para-professionals spread out across Grand Ridge’s large playground area, it felt like there was an opportunity to better support the kids in having a safe and responsible recess time.

That led to the school & PTSA Board working together to find a creative solution to having more positive resources for the playground: the YMCA playCoach program. This innovative program gives Grand Ridge a skilled coach who has specialized training in working with kids. A “play coach” provides fun group games that anyone can participate in which are designed to focus on health and skill related fitness including endurance, strength, flexibility, agility, balance, and coordination. These games further develop the student’s interest in physical activity. It’s a great outlet for kids and another pair of responsible eyes for our large playground! This fall the coach is often on the sand field supporting the kids as they organize different games.

The playCoach program at Grand Ridge is funded through generous PTSA donations from Auction 2018. Have additional questions or want to propose a new idea to fill a need at Grand Ridge? Great, please reach out to: grptsapresident@gmail.com
