2018-19 School Year, Volume 13, Issue 8

What a year! It seems like we were just doing the Back to School Social and now suddenly it is Summerfest! The weather is definitely going to deliver on the "summer" part so we hope to see your whole family there. And if you can volunteer for an hour that would really help the event go well for everyone.

At our last General Membership Meeting we heard from several parents on things they would like to see in the future which also complemented the findings from our parent survey earlier in the month. We elected new officers for next year: Laura Gaffney and Kim de Booij-Moors to the President and Vice President roles, joining Erin Michael as Board Secretary.

We reflected on this year's accomplishments: offering new and expanded programs like Drama Club, STEM Club & Spelling Bee, funding stipends for each teacher as well as each grade to enhance the existing curriculum, leading monthly art lessons for every classroom, supporting an author visit and musician-in-resident week, and creating events like Falloween, Talent Show & Cultural Fair that give the kids a chance to come together and celebrate as a community.

We would not have been able to do all of this and more without the support of our PTSA members, our volunteers and program chairs, and your financial support of our fundraisers. Thank you! (And we'd love to see you this Friday at the Volunteer Appreciation Reception!)

Hope your family enjoys a wonderful PNW summer - or wherever your summer takes you!

Family Tech Talk

Local educator and parent Jessi Christiansen led a Family Tech Talk discussion for Grand Ridge parents on the morning of May 23rd. The session provided a framework of issues to consider and discuss within your family in order to develop a technology plan that makes sense for you. It noted four pillars of good internet use - Be Online, Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Savvy - to consider as you talk with your kids about digital responsibility.  It emphasized that each family may approach things differently and it was interesting to share thoughts and questions with other parents in the room.

The other key point that Jessi returned to was the importance of addressing the topic proactively and as part of an ongoing family conversation. The digital world is changing faster than many of us can keep up with, but it we keep talking as families and as a community, we can help ensure we're helping kids be good citizens both on and offline.

We will look to host another Family Tech Talk in the new school year in an evening session to accommodate different parent schedules.
