2019-2020 School Year, Volume 14, Issue 4

It’s been another busy, fun-filled month at Grand Ridge.  Since our last issue, the Grand Ridge community has danced at Falloween, provided staff with breakfast as part of staff appreciation, “visited” the Netherlands with Cultural Club, and so much more!  These events could not be possible without amazing volunteers, generous donations through our fundraising efforts, and a great group of PTSA members.  Thank you all for helping make Grand Ridge such GRAND school for our children!

PTSA Meeting

Join us on Tuesday, November 19 at 9:15am in Portable 10 for a discussion and Q&A with Jake Kuper, Issaquah School District's Chief of Finance & Operations on the 2020 renewal/replacement levy on the ballot for February. Also, on the agenda will be a leader from the Voice Mentor program, Principal Ravenscraft, and a PTSA program update. The agenda and materials can be found here and if you can't attend but have a question, just email us at grptsa@gmail.com.

Scholastic Book Fair

Reading is “snow” cool! Scholastic “Arctic Adventure” Book Fair coming December 3rd-6th, 8:30am to 5:00pm in the school library. Stop by before or after parent teacher conferences. Support our school library while purchasing affordable holiday gifts for your students or teachers.

For the first time, we will have an eWallet option you can fund at home that will allow students to purchase books without bringing cash to school. Details will be available after November 18th online here and in the Scholastic book fair flyer that will come home with your student.

Volunteers needed for the Scholastic Book Fair! Please sign up for a shift, December 2nd-6th, to help with set up, sales, cashier, or clean up needs.

Volunteer of the Month

Our volunteer of the month is Greg Davis.  Greg is new to Grand Ridge this year and has jumped in both feet first.  In the last two months, he has been a regular member of Grizzly Guys, assisted students in the library, pitched in during picture day, vision & hearing screening, and more.  Thank you, Greg, for all you do at Grand Ridge!

Spelling Bee

Grand Ridge’s annual Spelling Bee returns on January 13, 14, and 15.  Registration is open through January 6.  Visit our Spelling Bee page on our website for registration information and spelling lists by grade.

Talent Show

Share your talents with our school!  Our annual Grizzlies Got Talent show is on Wednesday, January 22.  Registration is open through December 11.  Visit our website for more information and to register your student(s).  We can’t wait to see what our Grizzlies have in store for us this year!

Cultural Club

Cultural Club returned this week!  Students had the opportunity to learn about the Netherlands.  They had a chance to make their own Dutch tiles.  Next week we will travel to Vietnam.  Cultural Club takes place on Thursdays during 2nd recess in Portable 10.  For a full schedule of the countries students can learn about, visit our Cultural Club page.

After School Movies

After School Movies are a fun way for your kiddos to spend some time after school. We will show Dr. Seuss’ the Grinch (PG) immediately after school on Wednesday, December 11. Each After School Movie date is open to all grades (K-5) and there are 100 first-come-first-served spots available for each movie. A $10 donation is requested per Grand Ridge student. Registration for the movie is due no later than the Monday before the showing you wish to attend. No exceptions. Go to http://grandridgeptsa.org to register your child and sign-up to volunteer.  Once your child's spot is reserved, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. For questions, please email jess_russi@yahoo.com.

Holiday Gift Drive

The K-Kids club at Grand Ridge is excited to host a Holiday Gift Drive to support the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank.  Each December, Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank turns the Pickering Barn into a giant department store and allow parents to shop and choose gifts for their children. Last year, they served 1,800 children in the Issaquah School District!  They need brand new gifts for ages 0-18. If you don't know what age to shop for, please consider donating gifts for children ages 9-18, as this tends to be their leanest category. Gifts should be brand new and unwrapped.  Stuck on ideas?  Check out their Amazon Wishlist as a jumping off point or download their general wish list.  If you prefer to make a financial contribution instead, you can do so using their form.

Donation bins are located by the Grand Ridge office, so please drop off any donations there through Monday, December 2nd.  These items could make a BIG difference in the lives of our neighbors. THANK YOU!!

Box Tops results

Thank you to everyone who submitted box tops and to the volunteers who helped count them.  We collected 4,883 box tops which will bring $488.30 to our school!  The class with the most box tops submitted was Mrs. Fulghum’s class.  Keep collecting the physical box tops for our spring drive.  You can submit digital box tops any time.  See our website for more details on how to collect digital box tops.

Volunteer Opportunities

We always have opportunities available for those who wish to volunteer outside of the classroom.  While many opportunities are during the day, we also have many that are in the evening and even some you can do from home.  There are also options where you can bring your children with you.  Check out our volunteer opportunities.  If you have questions, please connect with our Volunteer Director, Kainoa Patterson at grptsavolunteers@gmail.com

We are in need of a Science Fair team to help organize our bi-annual Science Fair that is happening in March.  If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Liette Loiselle at grptsaevents@gmail.com.

We also still need a chair or co-chairs for our Yearbook.  If you are interested, check out our volunteer page and contact our PTSA President, Laura Gaffney, at grptsapresident@gmail.com.

Lost & Found

Check the lost & found area during conferences to pick up anything your student(s) may have forgotten.  The lost & found is located by the stairway near the first-grade hallway.  Unclaimed items will be donated before winter break.

Ride Carefully

Please remind your students to ride their bikes and scooters carefully to school.  This includes not doing stunts off the stairs and sidewalks or racing down hills.  There are many people on the sidewalks and the road gets especially busy during drop off and pick up.  We want everyone to be safe.

As the wetter months approach, the carpool lane will become busier as well.  Please pull forward to fill in the space and wait to have your child(ren) exit the vehicle until after you’ve passed the crossing guard.  Adults should remain in their vehicles to help things move smoothly.
